Multi-Stage Rocket Launch

Design and demonstrate a multi-stage water rocket with controlled stage separation and recovery.

Before you begin

This challenge explores advanced staging concepts through a controlled model-rocketry platform. Teams must demonstrate reliable stage separation, stable flight and recovery.

EligibilityCollege & university students
Team size1–5 participants

01

The challenge

Build a two-stage or three-stage water rocket capable of controlled separation and continued flight.

  • Design multiple rocket stages with a clear separation mechanism.
  • Ensure the stages remain stable during flight.
  • Develop a reliable automatic separation system.
  • Provide appropriate recovery for the rocket stages.
  • Explain the principles behind the staging architecture.
02

Stage design

Each stage should work as part of a complete system while maintaining safe and predictable operation.

  • Design each stage with a clear function.
  • Keep connections secure before launch.
  • Ensure separation occurs only at the intended stage of flight.
  • Avoid mechanisms that could create uncontrolled hazards.
  • Test the separation system thoroughly before competition.
03

Testing and preparation

Multi-stage systems require careful testing because a failure in one stage can affect the complete flight.

  • Test individual stages before assembling the complete system.
  • Test the separation mechanism under controlled conditions.
  • Check all structural and recovery connections.
  • Prepare a clear launch and recovery procedure.
  • Follow the official launch instructions.
04

Evaluation

The challenge will assess system design, stage separation, flight performance, recovery and technical understanding.

System design

Quality of the overall multi-stage architecture and engineering decisions.

Stage separation

Reliability and effectiveness of the separation mechanism.

Flight performance

Stability and successful operation across the flight.

Recovery & presentation

Recovery performance and clarity of the team's technical explanation.

05

Safety rules

All multi-stage launches must be performed under the supervision and procedures established by the organisers.

  • Use only approved launch systems and materials.
  • Never approach a pressurised system without authorisation.
  • Keep spectators and participants outside restricted areas.
  • Do not use combustible or explosive propulsion systems.
  • Unsafe designs may be removed from the launch.
