Solid-Fuel Rocketry

Build and fly a solid-fuel rocket under a controlled range-safety procedure.

Before you begin

This advanced college-level challenge focuses on model rocket engineering, flight performance, recovery and disciplined range operations. All propulsion and launch activities must follow the official safety procedure.

The challenge

Design, construct and fly a model rocket using an approved solid-fuel propulsion system under controlled launch conditions.

  • Develop a stable and structurally sound model rocket.
  • Use only propulsion systems approved by the organisers.
  • Design an appropriate recovery system.
  • Prepare the rocket for supervised launch.
  • Document the major engineering decisions behind the design.
02

Rocket design

The vehicle should demonstrate sound engineering principles across structure, stability, propulsion integration and recovery.

  • Ensure the airframe is structurally sound.
  • Provide an appropriate stability configuration.
  • Secure all major components before flight.
  • Integrate the approved propulsion system according to event instructions.
  • Design for safe recovery and post-flight inspection.
03

Flight preparation

Every flight must be prepared and conducted through the official range-safety process.

  • Complete all required pre-flight checks.
  • Submit required technical information to the organisers.
  • Follow the official launch sequence.
  • Remain outside restricted launch areas unless authorised.
  • Inspect the vehicle after recovery.
04

Evaluation

Evaluation may consider engineering quality, flight performance, recovery and technical documentation.

Engineering design

Quality, robustness and thoughtfulness of the rocket design.

Flight performance

Stability and performance during the supervised flight.

Recovery

Effectiveness and reliability of the recovery system.

Technical documentation

Quality of engineering documentation and explanation.

05

Range safety

Solid-fuel rocketry involves regulated propulsion systems. Safety requirements take precedence over performance.

  • Use only organiser-approved propulsion systems.
  • Do not manufacture or modify propulsion materials.
  • Follow all range-safety instructions.
  • Do not approach a launch system without authorisation.
  • Any unsafe vehicle or operation may be disqualified.
